Towngas joins hands with Social Welfare Department and NGOs to give away 1,800 bottles of soups to elderly in need

(20 December 2023) As the cold wave swept in, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department and multiple social welfare organisations, embarked on a heartwarming mission to visit the elderly in different neighbourhoods to give away 1,800 bottles of hot soup and care packs, sending warmth to the elderly amid chilly winter days.

The Operation Warm Winter campaign recently commenced in the Eastern District. The Towngas Volunteer Service Team (TVST), along with other volunteer organisations, assembled a group of over 150 volunteers. They paid visits to elderly singletons and doubletons in the area, delivering them comforting soup and care packs. Grandma Cheung, who lives alone in Healthy Village, said it was particularly heartwarming to have volunteers visit her on the eve of the Winter Solstice. “I’m delighted that volunteers came to visit, kept me company, engaged in conversations, and brought me soup and care packs. It’s a wonderful Winter Solstice gift.”

Mr Edmund Yeung Lui-ming, Designated Chief Financial Officer of Towngas, said that the Operation Warm Winter campaign was his first involvement with TVST, making it more meaningful to him. “I hope that this small token of kindness, this bottle of soup, can bring warmth to the elderly. Through this initiative and the visits, we want to remind members of the community to pay attention to the physical and mental well-being of the elderly around them. Towngas’ Soup to Warm the Heart initiative has been organised since 1999, and we have been delivering soup every week. To date, we have distributed over 720,000 bottles of soup to various communities in Hong Kong.”

The Operation Warm Winter campaign is jointly organised by the Eastern and Wan Chai District Co-ordinating Committee on Elderly Services of the Social Welfare Department and six social welfare organisations. Towngas not only sent its volunteer team to participate in the event but also sponsored 1,800 bottles of soup and care packs, adding a heartfelt touch of warmth to the elderly during this winter.

Towngas has continuously introduced various initiatives to support and care for the elderly. Alongside the Soup to Warm the Heart initiative, TVST also gives away seasonal food items, including rice dumplings and mooncakes, in order to bring warmth to the community during various festivities.

Additionally, Towngas launched the Towngas Concession Schemes to alleviate the financial burden on the elderly. The Company also provide complimentary volunteer services, including photography sessions, haircuts, and the installation of safety handrails for the elderly in need. Earlier this year, Towngas launched the Sending Warmth to Thousands with Smart Technology donation programme, aiming to install smart controllers in 10,000 households across Hong Kong. This innovative initiative allows the elderly and their family members to remotely monitor their gas appliances and use a mobile app to turn off the appliances in case of an emergency, supporting seniors with mild cognitive impairment and their carers.
